(as if that would be so horrible, anyway), that bringing up poverty would turn off these types who, let's face it, are probably borderline racists/classists. I mean, isn't poverty associated with those who have been kept down for ages? I think once he got in, things would change. And look how well it worked for Edwards to talk about ending poverty.
