Attorneys for a gay rights group told the Colorado Supreme Court that a proposed ballot measure that would bar gays from forming unions "similar to marriage" is ambiguous and violates the single-subject rule.
The measure under attack is sponsored by state Rep. Kevin Lund-berg, R-Berthoud, and former Colorado Springs car dealer Will Perkins. It says the government cannot "create or recognize a legal status similar to that of marriage" for gays.

In a brief filed Monday, Coloradans for Fairness and Equality argued that the measure's "key phrase - 'legal status similar to that of marriage' - is a cipher, but voters are not given the decoder ring."

"It's so vague that it means different things to different people," said Patrick Steadman, one of the lawyers who drafted the brief.
