Kid Wetzel takes Daredevils’ reins

The kid did all right.

“Coach Justin is young, but not when it comes to x’s and o’s,” said Martane Freeman of Butte’s brand-new, 27 year-old head coach, Justin Wetzel. Wetzel marshaled his troops with fluid substituting and timely game stoppages in his CBA debut at the Butte Civic Center on Friday night.

Wetzel, who just came on board the ‘Devils bus three days ago, was impressed with his team in spite of the 115-101 loss to the Great Falls Explorers.

“We didn’t play with any lack of effort. In fact, (Carl) Boyd said he hadn’t seen the team play with this much effort in a long time,” said Wetzel.

Wetzel, who took over for player-coach Odell Bradley, noted some areas he thought needed fine tuning, though.

“We need to do a better job off the dribble penetration. And we’re a little stagnant yet,” said Wetzel. The ‘Devils new coach, more than once, was heard from the sideline yelling to his troops to stop standing around.
