1. It's a wedge. Just like trying to overturn Roe v. Wade...
...and anyone that thinks anything is going to be done about these constitutionally, is worrying about something that is not going to happen. These issues are far more valuable as "boogeymen" that unite right wingers against democrats. Hell, the Gay Marriage amendment disappeared off the face of the earth after the election, but don't worry, it will make a comeback as an issue during the 2006 elections. Just like an attempt to reverse Roe v. Wade will.

If the right didn't have something like these to scream about, they might actually have to talk about the raping and pillaging of Medicare, the attempted theft of social security, the failing of our educational system, large Corporations using their tax break money to offshore American jobs, the failure to capture Bin Laden, the soldier coming home in body bags, etc....
