God told A&E (not the TV channel) they would die if they ate from the Tree of Knowledge, but the serpent told them the truth. The Tree of Knowledge initiated A&E into the world.

God then acted unreasonably and punished not just the offending serpent, but all of its kind. God seems to like punishing the innocent for the deeds of others. This is the main theme in Jesus' crucifixion story. God has Jesus punished because other people are assholes.
