DIE, DIEBOLD, DIE … In perhaps the best local example of karma in action since Carlos Boozer’s descent into obscurity, Diebold Inc. — the Canton-based manufacturer of electronic voting machines — recently suffered through a week like something out of the Book of Revelations.

• Dec. 12: Diebold CEO Walden O’Dell — who stated he was “committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president” before the 2004 election — abruptly resigned his position and was replaced by Thomas Swidarski.

• Dec. 13: The election supervisor in Leon County, Florida, once again demonstrated that Diebold’s machines can be hacked using consumer electronics and in such a way as to leave no trace of the deceit on the paper trail. That same day, Connecticut-based law firm Scott & Scott LLC filed a securities fraud class-action lawsuit against Diebold and its chief officers in federal court...

Oh, also last week: Diebold machines were delivered to Cuyahoga County for use in this spring’s election. Here’s hoping someone kept the receipt.
