43. Yes
I've been noticing this for some time now.

I've been thinking it over during the last few hours, mostly listening to the Songs of Leonard Cohen and drinking some very fine Spanish red wine.

Let's go by numbers:

1. Most of these people (but not all) are too stupid to understand what they're doing or what's going on.

2. They're certainly not ashamed to display themselves enjoying what they perceive to be their triumph (their fall?).

3. This handsign, this gesture, seems to be one of shared complicity, between and amongst "initiates", or those "in the know". Maybe they think it's only a way of expressing their sensation of "victory".

4. Ancient, deep, but also contemporary (international, intercultural - at least European) meanings of this symbol: The Devil. Cuckold.

5. The (Old Testament) Devil (Beelzebub, Satan), Cuckold (infidelity), both share the same foundation in the Judeo-Christian tradition: Betrayal. Treason.

6. Maybe all this doesn't really mean anything. I think someone above suggested that these people are, perhaps, just playing, just enjoying themselves (and their sense of triumph). But also: maybe unconsciously they are in some way driven to express a deeper truth: viz. Betrayal. Treason.

7. Maybe, on a superficial level, there's nothing much in it. BUT, in any case, maybe, this extremely explicit symbolism could be turned, and used against them. At a deeper level.

- and that's enough numbers for now <g>.

In the words of Leonard Cohen: "Freedom soon will come. Men will come from the shadows."
