MADISON — A growing crop of potential candidates is emerging to take U.S. Rep. Mark Green’s place in Congress if he runs for governor in 2006.
Among them are state lawmakers from Grand Chute, Appleton and Bellevue as well as a former Green Bay mayor.
Green, a Republican from Green Bay first elected to Wisconsin’s 8th District congressional seat in 1998, this week gave his clearest signal yet that he would pursue a gubernatorial bid.
He told state GOP leaders in an e-mail that he was moving toward launching a campaign to oust Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, in the fall 2006 election.
On Thursday, Green said he had not made up his mind.
