The WimDems are pleased to announce our Distinguished Speaker for this very Special Event Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Jim Wright '50 Years of Presidential Leadership: 1954 - Present'
Speaker Jim Wright was a member of Congress for 34 years, served 8 American Presidents from 1955-89 and was the majority leader of the Democratic Party from 1977-87 when his colleagues chose him as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Please join us for this privileged occasion to welcome the Brother of our own Ms. Betty Wright, and to hear his searching, humorous and enlightening insights, gained through his long and tumultuous career.
Speaker Wright helped President Carter achieve the historic peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, and was the principal advocate in Congress for an energy policy to reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. His most recent book, Balance of Power: Congress and the Presidents from the Era of McCarthy to the Age of Gingrich was published in 1996.
During World War II, Wright flew combat missions in the South Pacific, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross. He is currently writing his memoirs about WW II. Among Speaker Wright's many current activities, he is a distinguished lecturer at Texas Christian University where he teaches a course entitled "Congress and the Presidents." His personal archive and library form a Special Collection at the TCU Library.
He will shed major light on many of the problems the United States faces in the world today.
