By Denise Ross, Journal Staff Writer

Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., takes too much credit for South Dakota's status as a leader in distance education, according to 49 state lawmakers and ex-lawmakers who signed on to a letter written by South Dakota Republican Party officials.

The group of all Republicans takes issue with a Daschle campaign TV ad that features Rapid City teacher Tammy Mestad explaining how she is earning a master's degree via the Internet from Dakota State University in Madison, about 400 miles away.

The GOP lawmakers say the credit for distance education in South Dakota goes to former Gov. Bill Janklow and state lawmakers who supported him.

"We are disappointed in your failure to recognize those who did the lion's share of the work," the lawmakers wrote to Daschle. "Years of focus and millions of dollars in resources have put our state's distance learning program among the best in the nation."
