I never really played much, though some of my friends did. I just went to the conventions with them because it was a way to get outta the house overnight at 17. They were super-nerdy in retrospect but there was almost always (in order of importance) nerdy girls, alcohol, other male nerds and adults who would hold a conversation with a kid and not talk down to them.
