on the sidewalk or on public transit begging bystanders NOT to call an ambulance (if they're conscious).

Because they know that trip to the ER just to get checked out just in case might lead to 5- or 6-digit debt they have no hope of ever paying off. If they're capable of staggering away, they will beg us not to bankrupt their families.

"No, I'm fine, really," they've said, with the faces covered in blood or their shirts covered in puke. And off they toddle, knowing there's no REAL care in this country for anyone who lives paycheck-to-paycheck (which is millions of us).
