For his politics by most folks- but even among rightwingers, for the fact that he's considered a "tall poppy" or, as Americans might say: too big for his britches.

Interestingly enough, Elisabeth (Dame) Murdoch is highly regarded. There was a lot of press coverage and talk about during her 100th birthday last February. One of the common themes that came up was how such a fine woman could have ended up with such a wretched son.
