We are on the eve of something wonderful happening.

No, this event will not change things overnight. It will not automatically right all wrongs, nor undo the damage that’s been done. That will take time and effort. So let us be patient when it is necessary, and determined to make our own individual efforts count as part of the whole as we move forward.

I just wanted to say that being part of this community for the past few years has been an experience I will never forget – and I am particularly reminded of that tonight.

We have argued with each other, debated the issues – fought each other tooth-and-nail when we were riled, called each other names when we were pissed-off, questioned each other’s sanity and sincerity in the heat of passion that only politics can ignite.

But we came through it all, together in the end.

So here we stand, on the edge of history being made. And as much as this all means to me as an individual citizen – as it no doubt does to each of you – it wouldn’t be anywhere near as exciting, dramatic, awe-inspiring, uplifting and satisfying to the soul as it is about to be, if I were not experiencing it together with my DU family.

This seems a more than appropriate time to thank all of you for your companionship through the dark times, and your friendship throughout everything.

Thanks to those who opened my eyes when I was blinded by rage or spoke out of ignorance, to those who listened when I needed to vent, to those who patiently prodded me into understanding points of view that differed from my own, to those who gently reminded me that my opinion was not the only valid one to be profferred.

I love you all – but never as much as tonight.

Yes, we will – together.
