Ted Stevens concedes defeat in U.S. Senate race

Sen. Ted Stevens said he was "proud of the campaign we ran, and regret that the outcome was not what we had hoped for."
The longtime GOP senator from Alaska loses his seat to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat. Stevens had sought to hold on to his seat after his felony corruption conviction.

REPORTING FROM SEATTLE -- Alaska's veteran U.S. senator, Ted Stevens, conceded today that he had lost the Senate seat he has held for the last 40 years and congratulated Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, the Democrat who will represent the 49th state in January.

"Given the number of ballots that remain to be counted, it is apparent the election has been decided, and Mayor Begich has been elected," Stevens said in a statement, ending the long and somewhat awkward silence that followed Begich's declaration of victory Tuesday night.
