I do see white people noticing that Bill and Hillary Clinton were major supporters of blacks for all their life in politics but now that a black candidate is running blacks have abandoned Hillary.

Or as Stewie Griffin put it (in describing the hard-won Union victory in the Civil War), "We wrote a pretty big check for you people, so I think a thank you is in order."

The problem with that argument is that the economic opportunities that black Americans finally began to see during the 1990s were not a gift of the Clinton presidency. They were opportunities that black Americans were *owed* and that should have been available to them on the same terms that most white Americans had enjoyed for centuries. President Clinton deserves credit for acknowledging that debt and seeking to make good on it, but the idea that black Americans owe him (much less his wife) anything is derisory.
