Getting this dirt out now gives the candidates plenty of time to rinse it off or spin it in a positive way. It could be viewed as a fighter who is practising and in the process gets banged up, sure he's hurt but that gives him plenty of time to work on his skills and fix those weakness before the main event.

That said if the superdelegates were to decide who gets the nomination then the party could be severely crippled. People would see it as if their votes didn't matter.
