I'm glad I read this, because I suffer from that knee-jerk anger reflex - over what extremists on the other side, and caterwauling hate-radio mavens try to provoke in us.

I wanted to do my own show at one time. I liked doing uplifting things and personal growth and health and fitness stuff, and even anti-aging stuff. An expert told me that it wouldn't fly because you had to be controversial. THAT was the only way to get an audience and get ratings and justify being on the air. It wouldn't be appealing to some cable outfit or other production house if there wasn't lots of fiery controversy, tumult, and hard, sharp, pointy edges. For some reason, I just didn't have it in me to stir things up like that. It felt out of my element and a lot more work (including psychically) Of course, I'm a REAL Doris Day here, aren't I? :P

Anyway, thanks so much for this parable. I need to read stuff like this and be reminded. This nightmare, that I think started when the "backbench bombthrowers" coming in with ronald reagan decided to amp it up, and demonize, demonize, demonize for the sake of gaining the upper hand. Divide and conquer. Make sure everybody gets worked up with a big-ass case of the vapors, so that we're all at each other's throats.

We're SO wounded as a nation, as a people. And all the rot coming at us liberals and Dems has sometimes taken me to my own nasty place. That's why posts like yours, stories like yours, are SO valuable.
