"Whether they hang for one act of treason or a thousand, it’s all the same to me."

I am thinking you did not quite grasp the meaning of this essay, and its thesis/antithesis form.

The author states a position that she then contradicts. Each stated position is in the form "I don't care about x". She then goes on, as in this case to show how absurd the position is, given the reality of the situation.
