18. I remember something about Webb
He's a principled person and one thing stands out to me. When Webb was Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, he resigned in principle in a disagreement regarding the cutting of forces. During Reagan's last year there was an interview on 60 Minutes (or something like it) with Reagan. When asked about how he got along with various people in his administration, he started talking and then stopped cold, and said something along the lines of, "But first let me say something about someone who has had a few public spats with me and that's former Naval Secretary Jim Webb. While we had disagreements, he NEVER said anything in public that he didn't say to me to my face." He went on to say that with a lot of people it's all good wine and roses when talking to the Commander-In-Chief in private and then trash talk behind their back or even in public. While disagreeing on quite a few things, Reagan said he couldn't help but admire someone who had the guts to tell him what he thought and did it without fear or intimidation. Reagan said he knew because of that, that Webb was a "real man." I'll never forget that and I am glad to see the same principled Webb getting into politics in a big way.
