This was Allen's first visit to Iowa. He reminded audiences that his late father, former Washington Redskins coach George Allen, had his first head coaching job at Morningside College in Sioux City. Allen's parents married there, and he was conceived there, he said.

Allen was asked why he has changed his position to favor ethanol, a government-subsidized gasoline product made from corn?

Steven Schmitt, chairman of the Black Hawk County Republican Committee, said "He reminds me of a young Ronald Reagan. I think most Iowa Republicans are a little bit right of center. I think that's where he is. He is not on the extreme right."

U.S. Sen. George Allen defended congressional spending earmarks last night, although he said they need more scrutiny.

"Every single earmark I've gotten, I'm proud of," Allen told more than 300 people gathered for a town hall meeting at Chesterfield County's Clover Hill High School. Many were students.


A questioner who criticized the spying program drew boos from the Allen-friendly audience.

"I'd take him over John McCain," said retired Virginia Air National Guard Gen. Wilbur E. Ross. McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona, also is exploring a presidential candidacy. "Senator Allen is looking after our national interests."
