development. The Babcock Ranch in Florida is 91,000 acres of pristine wilderness and home for the Florida Panther, Black Bear, Birds, and all sorts of creatures. When it went up for sale people all over the state tried to get up the money to buy it. Little kids were even selling rubber bracelets for $3.00 to help.

Now this evil man, Syd Kitson has bought the property and wants to develop 17,000 acres and sell the rest back to Florida. He tries to make is seem like this is a "preservation effort" rather than just selling the rest of the land to get the money up to put 50,000 homes and I forget how much land for retail stores and offices.

I can't find the email but the preservation partnership said that 17,000 and 50,000 homes is relatively similar to MIAMI.

Please make a few phone calls and/or emails to Kitson and his partners and tell them you think they are ruining one of the last wilderness treasures in the US - or something like that(contacts at the bottom). All the efforts of local officials seem to not be working and the "nice" approach is not helping anymore. Maybe because the BUSH Brother is involved and going to make money off the deal. I know DU'ers are good at this sort of thing."

Do it for her. There are only between 50-90 Florida Panthers left.

The Babcock Ranch is one of the most ecologically important areas in our region. Located in Southeastern Charlotte and Northeastern Lee Counties, the Ranch is comprised of cypress domes, swamps, and mesic flatwoods and wet prairies in a block that straddles the Telegraph Swamp.
The species diversity found on the Ranch, coupled with the fast-growing population in the vicinity, make the ranch an ecological refuge. Its sheer size of 91,361 acres (143 square miles) makes it critical habitat to many species, particularly large mammals such as Florida panthers and Florida black bears.
Federal and State governments are currently administering an $8+ billion plan to restore the Everglades. Babcock Ranch and the waters of the Telegraph Swamp are extremely important to the health of the western Everglades ecosystem, particularly the Caloosahatchee River, making preservation of the Ranch important on a national scale.

This is the bullshit Kitson is spewing. He is trying to make it look like his development is really a preservation.

This community is on the verge of an historic accomplishment, and I am proud of my company's role in helping to assure the permanent preservation of approximately 74,000 acres of Babcock Ranch. While the significance of this environmental accomplishment cannot be overstated, I am equally proud of the widespread support and valuable input we have received from environmental and civic groups, community leaders and local citizens who have helped and are helping to shape the vision of Babcock Ranch.:evilfrown: :evilfrown: :evilfrown: :evilfrown: :evilfrown: :evilfrown: :evilfrown:
