In both cases, the Republican candidate went over the top to attack the Democrat, but the voters rejected the attack.

I think it's easier to attack that way when you are perceived as the favorite, and can dictate the news cycle.

Forrester was never the favorite. Kilgore led early, but the race was tight for several weeks, and Kaine was serving under a popular Democratic governor.

So again, we'll have to see if what happened tonight translates to the races next year. But this is certainly a promising sign.
