The Cherokees were uprooted from their rightful homeland thanks to the shameful actions of Andrew Jackson and what was called quite bluntly: The Indian Removal Act.
They were forced to move in terrible winter months, guaranteeing the deaths of the old and very young. Imagine someone with a gun coming into your home and with the backing of the government, telling you you had to pack only what you could carry and start walking the distance from North Carolina to Oklahoma. Fun times, huh?
