self interest can be sacrificed upon the alter of higher ideals, thus producing in the "sacrificer" a state of personal moral and ethical purity.

what the Right has done (and very well, i might add) is make economic self interest subordinate to personal sacrifice by calling upon people to place religious and philosophical values higher on the list of what is important.

by doing so a person can feel better about him/herself by offering up their own economic pain for a higher ideal.

it is a very human trait to do so and the Right has mined this aspect of human nature quite effectively.
