5. The point was...
...to first Drop Out of the routine, mindless state that is primary American culture, Turn On (using psychedelics to expand your consciousness), and then to Tune In; that is, bring your vision back into the world to change it.

Not a bad idea then...not a bad idea now. It's not something you can do all at once; simply dropping out is a stepped process. It's like clearing the earth and plowing it before you're ready to plant the seeds of the next step. And the Turn On wasn't limited to psychedelics, either; some other sacramental, transformative experience would do as well, so long as the preparation had been done and it was embraced wholeheartedly. The goal is not simply to withdraw and stay stoned; the goal is to change yourself in order to change the world.
