He thought there was room for everybody and that
everybody could be convinced to co-exist.

The problem is that you can bully individuals into submission,
some of them, but you will never get an ethnic group as a whole,
or a religious one, over time, to buy that. It always takes a lot
of work to keep them down. And the young ones coming up always
want to know why? Underneath that lies the simple fact that they
are right, they are not inferior, there is not a tinkers damn
worth of differerence in the genetic complement we are all born with,
when considered by ethnicity, nor is there anything other than
self-interest and momentary advantage behind the notion that one
group ought to be able to lord it over another.
