Two shot dead in apparent murder-suicide

CLINTON -- A Clinton man shot and killed his estranged wife yesterday while their 19-year-old daughter was at their Oak Street home, then apparently turned the gun on himself, police said.

Earl E. Gonyea Jr., 43, shot Kimberly St. Hillaire, 38, in the head and chest around 1:30 a.m. before shooting himself in the head, Clinton Police Chief Mark R. Laverdure said. Their daughter, Gabrielle St. Hillaire, who was in the house with a 17-year-old friend, called police after the shooting, Laverdure said.

Gonyea was separated from his wife and not living there prior to the shooting. The couple was planning to divorce and sell the house, a neighbor said.

"It was a shocker," said the neighbor, who asked not to be identified.
