GUN LOBBY ALREADY PREPARING FOR NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION

SPRINGFIELD -- The gun lobby is already planning its next salvo across lawmakers' bow even though the General Assembly will not be returning to Springfield until November.

Sen. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, wants to expand state police background checks at gun shows, but the measure requires state police to erase the information within 24 hours if the firearm purchaser comes up clean.

"My interest is to set the table for the next session," Roskam said, adding Senate Bill 3389 probably won't be discussed until spring. "It's a matter of getting something on the table and getting it started."

Regulating gun show sales has been a constant sticking point in the annual debate over gun control. The proposal also takes steps to dismantle the agency's database that tracks gun sales and removes the waiting period for firearms bought at gun shows.
