Glance through this NRA ratings list for the U.S. House and you will notice a number of Democrats who received high ratings from the NRA.

NRA Support For Democrats In Key Midterm Races Frustrating GOP

By Ben Pershing

Not a lot of things have gone the Democrats' way this year, but dozens of their House candidates are getting a late boost from an unusual source: the National Rifle Association.

So far this year, the NRA has endorsed 58 incumbent House Democrats, including more than a dozen in seats that both parties view as critical to winning a majority.

The endorsements aren't the result of a sudden love for a party with which the NRA is often at odds. Rather, the powerful group adheres to what it calls "an incumbent-friendly" policy, which holds that if two candidates are equally supportive of gun rights, the incumbent gets the nod.

The policy has been in place for some time, and the NRA has always backed a number of Democrats, but the group's choices have become especially contentious this year because control of Congress is at stake and because so many gun-supporting Democrats were elected over the past four years.

Part of the problem with our party is that many of us insist that being a Democrat means being against the Second Amendment or in favor of draconian gun control laws. We fail to understand that a Democrat can be pro-gun and still support the important issues that our party feels will move this country in a better direction. Issues such as a fair healthcare system, better education for our youth, improved environmental laws, better job opportunities and insuring that the rich pay a fair share of the taxes. We often nominate candidates who favor gun control measures proposed by the Brady Campaign because we lack understanding of the shooting sports and have an unrealistic fear of honest and responsible firearm owners.

Those who own firearms and enjoy the sport of shooting look at lists as in the link above and if they see the the Democratic candidate for office has an "F" rating from the NRA, they show up at the polls to vote for the Republican who has an "A" rating. They are single issue voters because they have a considerable amount of money and time invested in their hobby.

If both the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate have high ratings, gun owners may take the time to look further and consider other issues and often vote for the Democrat.

A Democrat with an "A" rating from the NRA is still a Democrat and is a far better choice than a Republican.
