GM on Tuesday showed off several new trucks, including hybrid pickups due out early next year and a new line of pickups and SUVs that get an extra mile per gallon fuel economy. The display included a hybrid pickup with a 22-foot power boat attached, making the point that some people still need horsepower to fit their lifestyles.

Four of GM's 2009 trucks - the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs - will be offered as XFE models, for "extra fuel economy." They'll deliver 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway, improvements of 7% and 5%, respectively.

The trucks will be lighter, more aerodynamic and feature some mechanical improvements, GM said. The trucks will have the same towing capacity. Pricing has not been announced. GM also has rolled out hybrid versions of its large SUVs, and last week showed off a high-end version of its massive Cadillac Escalade SUV and a hybrid model.

GM's light-truck sales are down 23% through July, while overall sales fell 18% . Along with the sales slide, the sinking residual values of trucks are driving losses at the company's leasing business. Both factors contributed to GM's massive $15.5 billion second-quarter loss announced earlier this month.
