Switching over to electric cars

By Rachel Cromidas
UNION-TRIBUNE

August 9, 2008

DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO – The garage at San Diego High School isn't your father's auto shop. There are no oil stains, nor is there the constant hum of gasoline-powered engines.

This is where auto-shop teachers from around the region yesterday completed a 10-day workshop learning the ins and outs of electric cars, lessons they will be taking back to their campuses come fall.

Workshop participants – a mix of teachers, electric-car enthusiasts and three San Diego High School students – converted three cars during the fourth annual Electric Car Conversion Class for Teachers.

“I think it's exciting. It's great to see an engine that's so big and gross get taken out to make room for something so nice and clean,” said the science teacher from River Springs Charter School in Riverside County.
