20. 1999 Martin HD-28 LSV
Large Soundhole Vintage. Forward-shifted, scalloped bracing. Adirondack spruce top, rosewood back and sides. Modeled after the famous D-28 Herringbone ("The Bone") previously owned by the late Clarence White and now owned by Tony Rice. This guitar's a monster. I played a Takamine for 20 years, which I loved for onstage work because of the electronics. Then, I finally got the Martin that will be my "lifetime" guitar. Some folks here are partial to Taylors, personally, I'm not. Why? They don't sound like a Martin. Nobody's mentioned Collings, who makes a damn fine guitar. But it still doesn't have the Martin sound.

I played two Gibsons I actually liked -- one was an old J-45 that had been beat to hell but sounded heavenly. The other was an Advanced Jumbo that sounded pretty doggone good.

But when it comes right down to it, nothing else is a Martin.
