Way dumb questions: K&R?

Fishing for FAQ's etc, no luck. I give up ... what the heck is "K&R"?

Also, maybe a sensitive question, but what's an average/normal donation to this site? (Yes, I ask the same about tips for baggage handlers in foreign airports and hotels).
