Do you think fast food work is degrading?
Advertisements [?]
Maybe, this is a bit of a copy cat thread but I was thinking about it at work. No, I didn't work fast food but I did for about a year when I was temping after graduating from college. The restaurant was close to where I lived and allowed a flexible schedule so that I could temp different shifts and look for a permanent job. A lot of people seem to think this work is degrading, but aside from the low pay and a couple of rude customers, I found it to be one of the least degrading jobs that I ever have had. Many customers seemed appreciative of the work that I did. Management seemed appreciative of the work that I did. There wasn't anything too personal or degrading about taking people's orders or bagging up food. In a rush type situation, taking people's orders and getting their food to them quickly and correctly seemed like an accomplishment. Some of the adults that I worked with (older people or parents with children in school) didn't really have to work but did so because of the social aspect. Maybe, I had a differnt experience than most fast food workers but I didn't find it degrading. Actually, I would prefer that work if I could make a middle income doing it without having to work long hours (like most fast food general managers).
