Any time I've gotten a flat tire or run my wheel into a ditch, some guy was sure to appear out of nowhere to change it for me or pull me out with his pickup. Engine trouble also tends to bring them around like flies.

On the other hand, when I was pregnant and visiting my parents in the city, I *never* had a guy stand up and offer me his seat on the subway. But more than once, some non-English-speaking old grannie would poke a grandchild to give me theirs.

What I conclude from this is that the male definition of "distress" is strictly limited to guy-type problems.
