5. At my old company
They called it "Reduction in Force" or RIF. In fact (and I know this to be true), the managers were all required to refer to it as RIF. So you'd be at meetings and a manager would say something like "blah blah blah the RIF blah blah" or "The RIF is blah blah" well, you get the picture. They were not allowed to use the phrase "layoff" under any circumstance.

Needless to say, I too was ultimately RIFFED.
