DU ladies: does it offend you to be called a "chick"?

Me and my girlfriend just had this conversation after one of her friends got mad at me when i referred to her as a chick. I didn't mean anything bad by it- frankly i hadnt given much thought to it until now. is this an offensive term? its become so common, like 'dude' or 'man' or 'guy'.

what say you?
