Nothing makes a religious zealot more objectionable than pressure from a zealot of the opposite polarity.
Tolerance breeds mutual respect and peace. Intolerance breeds the opposite.
By smiling and saying "Thank you" you spread a little more tolerance in a world badly in need of that commodity. Anything other than that is an attempt to shove your own ideology down their throat, and increases the intolerance level.
