Barry Goldwater was a moderate compared to the raving, hate-filled lunatics that have overrun the GOP.
Sure he was hawkish, but he had nothing but contempt for the religious loonies...I've heard more then once he didn't exactly get along with Reagan either and he generally fell more in line with the libertarian "stay the hell out of my bedroom" position on social issues in his later career.
