I happened to see it on the menu last night.
8PM Mondays Victoria Beckham: Coming to America
Brought to you by the same people who brought you American Idol
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/buddytvlatesttvhighlights/archives/118171.aspIf anyone can do it, it's David Beckham. Not because he's the greatest player our country has ever had (Pele wasn't bad), but because he's the biggest soccer celebrity our country has ever encountered. Actually, make that celebrity couple. Tonight, NBC will air Victoria Beckham: Coming to America (8pm ET/PT), a behind-the-scenes look at Posh Spice's move from England to Los Angeles. She'll go house-shopping, hang out with friends, and give interested Americans a sense of who exactly these Beckhams are. Despite their name recognition, the essence of the Beckhams is still a mystery to most of us here. After watching some of the leaked segments from tonight's special, I think viewers are going to be delighted by what Victoria Beckham brings to the table. She has more personality than a thousand Paris Hiltons.
The NBC special, which is said to only feature a brief cameo from David Beckham, is all part of a calculated plan by Simon Fuller. It's the invert of how Beckham originally became famous. Initially, in England, soccer was used to sell David Beckham to the masses. Now, in America, the Beckhams are being used to, ultimately, sell soccer to the masses.
Beckham wants be a soccer ambassador (he has said as much) and so his move to Los Angeles, where another Fuller import, Simon Cowell, has done quite well, is an obvious choice. If all the hoopla surrounding the Beckham's arrival in Los Angeles - Posh's NBC special, David on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the omnipresent Nike commercial currently airing, and countless other news pieces - gets more people to watch Saturday's match between the Galaxy and Chelsea, than Fuller and the Beckhams have done exactly what they set out to do: take that first step on their way to conquering soccer in America.
Feel free to be skeptical of such an ambitious desire, but I'm not going to underestimate the guy who created American Idol or the world's biggest sports star, let alone a combination of the two.
