Just read the synopsis in Wikipedia. Doesn't look familiar.

IIRC, Splinter was the first thing out after Star Wars. So alla us geeks were desperate for more SW fiction, so we pounced on it when it arrived in the bookstores.

Rumor at the time was, it was supposed to be the basis for the next movie--until some Fox exec realized "Whoops, we left out Han Solo, our most popular character!" Reality is that Harrison Ford hadn't signed yet, so Alan Dean Foster* came up with a story treatment that omitted Han, in case he didn't sign on.


*The actual writer of the Star Wars novelization that came out just before the first movie, despite having Lucas' name as the author.
