A real "punk kid" would have either run away or gone running to Daddy for backup before facing you. (His friends didn't run off, either--that also speaks well for him.) You rewarded him for his class and maturity by returning his respect and not making things more difficult. If he inherited that from his folks, hopefully they'll be willing to sit down and try to work something out. It WAS an accident--they weren't joyriding, drinking, or out looking for trouble. Here's hoping for a happy ending.
