88. Crate engines can be a great value.
The GM 350s & 383s and the Ford 302/342, 351Ws & 392Ws are a great way to go. Chrysler has cool crate engines for the Mopar folks, and they all have big block versions. I roll my own because I am a cheap bastard and because I have a compulsion to work on stuff. Rodents gotta gnaw and I have to work on stuff.

The old Spitfire got 36 miles per gallon, and they are pretty cool. I figure that although the '58 will be the last real hot rod I have, I can still have some car fun. Maybe a VW turbo diesel in a Jeep.
