SEMI-SPOILER ALERT but I'm responding to someone asking about the ending. Don't read the rest of this post if you're planning to see the movie.

No, they weren't going to go out, again. At first it seemed like he was the one "slumming" and "dating down". He had this lofty intellectual veneer to him and she seemed more simple and into prosaic pop music and whatnot, but as the date wore on it became apparent she was actually the "deep" one, and she was looking for a kindred spirit and thought he was it.

But, when he stopped pretending to be a confident writer and all the other things and revealed he was just a scared guy who watches television and doesn't know what to do with his life (and they were both too long in the tooth for that), she realized how wrong she was about him. She had been taken in by his act. The person she thought he was didn't exist and the person he really was wasn't a person she had anything in common with, after all. She was the one who was striving for something out of life, not him. He was lost. She was still struggling.
