His grandpa, Tommy Douglas, led the first socialist government in North America (province of Saskatchewan) and founded Canada's medicare system. Kiefer himself is still supportive of the New Democratic Party and has done work for them in the past (see video link). I wonder what he thinks about the direction the show has gone? Perhaps he's playing the role in terms of social commentary?
