If they are flying, you can fairly easily catch them with the garbage can if you're quick enough. Then cover it quickly with a piece of cardboard or a cookie sheet or what ever is handy over the opening. If you have them trapped against the floor, wall or ceiling, carefully slide the cover under the trapping device so as not to hurt the bat. Then with the bat safely trapped, carry it outside and let it go.

That's the humane way to do it. There is also the tennis raquet/raquet ball raquet method which can be quite effective but usually deadly.
