B7 had been in production before Star Wars came out in England. The production staff were terrified that B7 would be a flop, because Star Wars had just come out in England, complete with fancy effects.

Thanks for looking at the B7, BTW. I'm looking forward to the sequel, and the DVDs coming to America - though I suspect buying the UK set and converting them to NTSC on my own would yield higher quality (BFS Video always does things on the cheap.)

However, B7 has ALWAYS had something Star Wars could never get a proper grasp on: Plot, suspense, and character - and those will hold up over time far more than special effects ever can. The Star Wars heroes are goody-goody toddlers compared to the more realistic gaggle that is Blake's 7. (now think of SW episodes 1 and 2 (and likely 3) and wince at how crapulent SW truly is.)

As for Battlestar Galactica... BG had a decent premise, but it would have been a better miniseries and even better if they they didn't lose direction. (Blake's 7, season 3, kinda lost direction but season 4, especially the latter half, really did a 180 and improved immensely...)

Edit: That's all by comparison, of course. I do rather like the original SW trilogy (eps 4-6 as they're contemporarily known by). But B7's lack of effects is made up by more daring plotlines and a more diverse group of people.
