As far as I know, sadly, there still hasn't even been a test developed that's very reliable because any coronavirus (and there are several) returns a positive result, and some other conditions have similar symptoms.

FIP is, if I'm up on the latest (I may not be, and I'm sure someone will advise you if I'm not), still mostly a post-mortem diagnosis. They do have a nasally-applied vaccine -- you could ask your vet about that, if you have cats now and are concerned.

My sympathies for the loss of your cat, we had one die of 'dry FIP' (the slower one) at the shelter where I volunteer, several years ago. I remember what it was like. They literally didn't know he had it until after he was gone, the attending vet did a biopsy of thoracic fluids and said that was what got him. Most of the time, I think that's still the way they determine it.
