Evolution is a process that results in heritable changes in a population spread over many generations. All organisms produce offspring that differ slightly in some characters. The differing characters may lead to a lessenning in the liklihood of survival, which will in turn result in those offspring not producing offspring of their own. Over the course of many years, those organisms which have characters selected against and their offspring will be less able to compete, meaning that organisms of that species will lose a selected-against character. changes in expressed characters over time will result in differing species, and changes from one species to another.
